Baghdad: Tailors

Ibn Khaldun (d. 1406) in his Muqaddima records an exchange in Baghdad between caliph al-Mansur and one of his sons (the future caliph al-Mahdi, r. 775-85). This exchange occurred while al-Mansur was in the Majlis consulting with tailors (khayyāṭ) about the mending of clothing in the royal household. See also: Weavers; Dyers; Embroiderers; Mat Makers.

Al-Hilal al-Sabiʾ (d. 1056) in his Kitāb al-Wuzarāʾ records the imperial budget for 291 (903-904) in Baghdad. The craftsmen listed in this document include tailors (khayyāṭ). See also: Weavers; Dyers; Embroiderers; Mat Makers.

In his al-Risāla al-Baghdādiyya, al-Tawhidi (d. 1023) mentions that sīnīzī transparant clothes was made in Baghdad. He indicates that sīnīzī fabric was imported from Siniz in Persia. See also: Weaver; Spinner; Embroiderer; Pillow Maker.
